<p>It can take many forms, from a documentary film or community campaign to a single personal testimony. Public interest communication can illuminate injustice and motivate people to take action.</p>



<p>The modern social and cultural landscape makes storytelling for social impact more essential than ever. <p>Effective communication has never been more critical in an era marked by profound challenges and rapid change. Public interest communication, which uses strategic storytelling and coalition-building to address issues of collective concern, is a powerful tool for advocacy.&nbsp;</p>



<p>From mobilizing communities to tackle climate change to raising awareness about human rights violations, <a href="https://realgoodcenter.jou.ufl.edu/about/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">public interest communication</a> unites stakeholders and amplifies their efforts to drive meaningful change.</p>



<p>The key to public interest communication is its ability to connect diverse groups around shared goals. It enables people and organizations to address urgent global challenges through grassroots campaigns and public education initiatives. Those who aspire to work in public interest communications may wonder where their skills can be most useful. The following examines some of the most pressing issues requiring strong public interest communication.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Mobilizing for a Sustainable Future</h3>



<p>The <a href="http://globalwarmingisreal.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate crisis </a>demands immediate action and global cooperation. With rising temperatures, melting ice caps, and increasingly severe weather events, the stakes could not be higher. Recent events, such as the catastrophic fires in Los Angeles and Hurricane Helene in Asheville, N.C., show the impact of intensified weather on communities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Public interest communication has proven instrumental in uniting governments, nonprofits, businesses, and individuals to push for sustainable solutions. <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Promoting Awareness of Public Health Crises</h3>

During the COVID-19 pandemic, public interest communication was pivotal in countering misinformation, encouraging vaccination, and promoting preventive measures. <p>Similarly, the opioid crisis in the United States highlights the necessity of coalition-building in addressing public health emergencies. <p>Growing up, I was a huge fan of David Letterman’s nightly Top Ten lists. A lot has changed in the world since Letterman signed off from <em>The Late Show</em> for the last time nearly a decade ago. One thing that has not changed is my love of a good list. With that in mind, I present from the home office in Gainesville, Florida, the Top Five reasons that students should attend the Public Interest Communications Summer Institute.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Number Five: It is Affordable and is Money Well Spent&nbsp;</h3>



<p>The cost to attend the Public Interest Communications Summer Institute is set at $50 for graduate students. Additionally, the Institute employs a “pay what you can” approach and offers scholarships to ensure that students who may not have the funds can benefit from all that it has to offer. The Institute&#8217;s organizers feel strongly that the cost should never be a deterrent for any students who want to attend.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Number Four: There is Nothing Else Like it&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Hosted by the <a href="https://www.jou.ufl.edu/public-interest-communications-educators-network/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Public Interest Communications Educators Network</a>, the Public Interest Communications Summer Institute is a unique event that brings together faculty, graduate students, researchers, and administrators from the field of Public Interest Communication who are<strong><em> </em></strong>interested in leveraging the power of communication for social good.</p>



<p>Over the course of a day and a half, attendees of the Public Interest Communications Summer Institute hear case studies from professionals in the field while also gaining valuable skills, networking, and meeting new collaborators. Each year, the Summer Institute features a central theme. Past themes have focused on Advocacy and Hope.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Number Three: The Institute Provides Students a Chance to Travel&nbsp;&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Each year, the Public Interest Communications Summer Institute is held in a different region of the country. Host cities for the institute are located near a major airport to make it easier for students from around the country to attend. Past Summer Institutes were held at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 2022, the University of Houston in 2023, and the Auraria campus in Denver, Colorado, which is home to Metropolitan State University of Denver, University of Colorado Denver, and Community College of Denver, in 2024. By hosting the Institute in a different city each year, students see how the tools of Public Interest Communication are used in various regions to build lasting social changes.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Number Two: The Sessions are Tailored to Equip Students with the Tools to Succeed&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Sessions at the Public Interest Communications Summer Institute are designed with students in mind. Past Summer Institutes have featured sessions that allowed graduate students to present their research and discuss their findings with academics and practitioners in Public Interest Communications who are able to provide real-time feedback. Other sessions focused on how students can get their research published in academic journals, like the Journal of Public Interest Communications, and finding a job in Public Interest Communications after graduation.</p>



<p>Through the multiple workshop tracts, students are able to select from a variety of sessions to tailor their Institute experience to meet their individual needs. By keeping attendance in each session low, students are able to interact one-on-one with the facilitators, ask questions, and receive beneficial feedback on their research. This is also an opportunity to ask any other questions they may have as they prepare to enter the field of Public Interest Communications. Presentation materials are sent to attendees after the Institute to ensure students do not miss anything and learning can continue.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Number One: It Connects Students with a Support Network&nbsp;&nbsp;</h3>



<p>The number one reason students should attend the Public Interest Communications Summer Institute is to build lasting connections with people actively engaged in Public Interest Communications work. Public Interest Communications is an emerging, interdisciplinary field that utilizes strategic communications strategies and scientific insights to foster meaningful and lasting change within communities. As a relatively new discipline, practitioners are spread throughout the world and can sometimes feel like they are working alone.</p>



<p>As the old saying goes, it takes a village to make a lasting change. Students who attend the Public Interest Communications Summer Institute can connect with fellow change-makers and current <a href="https://onlinemasters.jou.ufl.edu/public-interest/">Public Interest Communications</a> practitioners while forming lasting partnerships that will help them in their efforts to make lasting positive social changes in their communities and in the world as a whole.</p>

<p>Scan through almost any news site or social media feed, and the world can seem like a pretty dark place full of division and despair. While there are glimmers of positive news out there, oftentimes, it can seem like the greatest amount of attention is being paid to individuals who only wish to foment chaos. During the last week of May 2024, faculty, graduate students, researchers, and administrators from around the world came to Denver, Colorado, to take part in the third annual Public Interest Communication Summer Institute to equip themselves with ways to create positive change instead of division and destruction within communities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Is Public Interest Communication?&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Public Interest Communications is an <a href="https://onlinemasters.jou.ufl.edu/public-interest/">emerging, interdisciplinary field</a> that utilizes strategic communications strategies and scientific insights to foster meaningful and lasting change within communities.</p>



<p>Stitching together ideas and practices from the fields of public relations, advertising, journalism, and marketing that are informed by sociology, psychology, political science, and neuroscience, the <a href="https://www.jou.ufl.edu/home/about/faculty-staff-directory/center-for-public-interest-communications/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Center for Public Interest Communications at the University of Florida</a> defines Public Interest Communication as “the development and implementation of science-based, strategic communications with the goal of significant and sustained positive behavior change or action on an issue that transcends the particular objectives of any single organization.” Put another way, Public Interest Communications is tailored to make lives better for those it encounters.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What is the Public Interest Communication Summer Institute?&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Part of equipping people with the tools to succeed in building a lasting, positive change within communities involves meeting and swapping ideas with others working in the field. To that end, each year, the <a href="https://www.jou.ufl.edu/public-interest-communications-educators-network/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Public Interest Communications Educators Network</a> hosts the Summer Institute as a means of bringing together faculty, graduate students, researchers, and administrators interested in leveraging the power of communication for social good. In addition to hearing case studies from professionals in the field, participants at the Summer Institute are able to gain valuable skills, network, and meet new collaborators.</p>



<p>Past Summer Institutes were held at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 2022 and at the University of Houston in 2023. The Summer Institute continued moving west by hosting the 2024 event at Denver, Colorado’s Auraria campus, which is home to Metropolitan State University of Denver, University of Colorado Denver, and Community College of Denver.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hope for a Better World&nbsp;</h3>



<p>The theme of the 2024 Summer Institute was Hope. Over the course of a day and a half of workshops, attendees were exposed to myriad ways that hope can be used to show that change is possible and provide a roadmap for turning hope into action.</p>



<p>When looking at the current state of affairs in many parts of the world, it might be difficult for many to feel hopeful about their conditions. The late <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-full-picture/202001/how-mister-rogers-can-inspire-the-best-in-us" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fred Rogers</a> famously said that in times of tragedy, “If you look for the helpers, you will know that there is hope.” Public Interest Communications is designed to equip “helpers” to go into areas of need and give hope. The hope of the possibility of building a better world is what drives many of the activities of those who are involved in the field.</p>



<p>At the end of the Summer Institute, many attendees noted that they felt hopeful once more that the work they were engaged in mattered and that they could make a difference. The Summer Institute acts as an oasis in a desert of injustice to provide a bit of rest while empowering practitioners with new ideas to go out and be the helpers for social change that so many communities around the world need. Global issues like climate change and food insecurity will not be solved overnight. However, with people willing to use the tools of Public Interest Communications to go into one community at a time, those actions can have a snowball effect. By starting with a small change, efforts can grow into something much larger as more and more people get involved.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As many nonprofit fundraisers have come to realize, social media is becoming more important when asking for a gift. For most donors, visiting your Facebook or other social platforms is the first step in considering whether or not to donate to your organization. It’s crucial to set your organization up for success with a well-crafted social media presence. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To several organizations, simply having an account on social media is a benchmark for success. However, maintaining a consistent posting schedule, sharing engaging content and providing value to your online following can open your organization to more giving opportunities. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When creating social media posts on behalf of your organization, keep in mind it’s okay if you aren’t a social media guru! Allow your passion for your nonprofit to shine through in your posts. Just in case you’re still unsure of taking over your organization’s social media, here are a few general best practices to follow that will create an authentic online following that’s willing to reach into their wallets.</span></p>
<p><b>Keep your Followers Engaged</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The organization’s mission is what attracts individuals to follow your accounts, but it’s your content that keeps them there. Creating engaging content to share on your social channels is vital to your organization’s social media presence. </span></p>

Rather than leaving them hanging, respond! Even a simple “Thank you for your support!” shows your followers that they matter and that you recognize their engagement. </span></li>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Social media exists to provide your fans with behind the scenes insight into your nonprofit that they might not typically see. Use your social platforms as an opportunity to showcase the secret sauce of your organization. Highlight staff members, volunteers and board members. Provide value in following your social media that will set your organization apart as a leader in your subsector.</span></p>

The hashtag quickly went viral on Twitter, bringing tons of publicity to participating zoos. </span></p>

Take note of any increase in followers, likes, comments or shares and see if there is any correlation to an increase in gifts. Keep </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">track of how long an individual follows your organization before donating. These types of insights can demonstrate what is working well for your nonprofit when it comes to social media and what content seems to fall short. A great way to begin accessing your social media analytics is through </span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/business/news/audience-insights"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Facebook Audience Insights</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. This analytics platform is built into Facebook and allows page admins to see reach, engagement, likes, page views, actions on page and more. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Though social media can be daunting to many, it’s a great tool to gain an online following for your organization. It can be easy to get caught up in the number of likes and followers, but I can assure you, as long as you provide value, keep your followers engaged and track your progress, your organization will gain loyal followers willing to financially help your organization when they can. </span></p>
