Alex Perna is the Senior Director of Communications at IMG Academy, the world’s leading sports education brand, where he oversees internal and external communications strategies, media relations, new sport launches, and business initiatives. With a Master of Science in Communication and Media Studies from Purdue University and a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from the University of Central Florida, Alex brings both academic expertise and extensive professional experience to the classroom. His career began at NASCAR and has since spanned professional teams, sanctioning bodies, broadcast networks, sponsoring brands, and theme parks, including high-profile roles supporting communications for global brands like the Tampa Bay Lightning, Toyota, TikTok, and Universal Orlando Resort/NBC Universal.
As an educator, Alex takes a student-centered and purpose-driven approach to teaching. He is committed to bridging theory with practice, ensuring students gain not only foundational knowledge but also practical insights and strategies used in the fast-moving world of global sports media. By integrating real-world examples and inviting industry professionals to share their expertise, he strives to create an engaging learning environment that fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and confidence.
Outside of professional and teaching roles, Alex serves on the Board of Advisors for the University of Central Florida’s Nicholson School of Communication and Media. He is passionate about mentorship, community service, and helping others grow—values that extend into his work as an instructor. When not working, he enjoys spending time with family, staying connected to sports and industry trends, and bringing a real-world perspective to every learning experience.
